About Heart of Transit
About Heart of Transit
Heart of Transit was established as a non-profit entity to enhance rural transportation services within central Iowa, especially to those with special needs who depend on public transit as their life-line to their community. Heart of Transit will grant seek for funding, and use those funds to help central Iowa transportation providers create new programs, fund unique transportation services and implement on-going transportation options in central Iowa.
Door to Door transportation providers are much more than the buses they operate. They have a level of care and concern for those who use the services, and as HIRTA knows, we create a safe standard of transportation, which is reliable, affordable, and allows people to be mobile, keep their freedom and independence, and maintain a higher quality of life for a longer period of time.
Heart of Transit needs to ensure this type of transit service is sustained and enhanced as we move into the next phase of serving future generations and beyond.
About HIRTA
The Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency (HIRTA) is an intergovernmental agency established by a 28E agreement with the state of Iowa. HIRTA provides door to door public transit services throughout seven counties, Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Story and Warren, in Central Iowa.
HIRTA provides transportation to the general public with an emphasis on those with disabilities, the elderly and low-income residents. Our services pick people up at their door, assist them to the vehicle and take them to the door of their destination. This allows us to serve those in the community who do not have access to other forms of transportation, providing them with a safe, reliable and convenient way to travel around their community, therefore enhancing their quality of life, and allowing them to remain independent in their own homes.
Last year, HIRTA provided 300,000 rides, 95,000 hours and 1.3 million miles of service within our seven-county community, as well as, to the University of Iowa Medical Clinics in Iowa City and various locations within the Des Moines metro area too.
